Grants + Things

Some folks had wondered if I could have a page devoted to upcoming grant deadlines.

The short answer is, no, I can’t. Partially because of the reasons below, and the other part is that I don’t write one-off grants for clients.

The amount of research and administration required to keep on top of every grant deadline would mean that would become the bulk of my job, rather than helping you with your artistic endeavours. And if something changed, a program was cancelled or a deadline moved and I didn’t have that info here – that wouldn’t be good.

So I’ll split the difference with you. I’ll give you links to the websites of the three big guns, and some links to pages within for grants you can apply for to hire me to help you.

I will also give you one solid piece of free advice that applies to every grant you’ll find in these pages and links.

CONTACT THE PROGRAM OFFICER.

Call before you apply. Talk to them about your project. Find  out if you qualify. Call more than a week before the deadline. CALL THEM. They want to help you, they want to see good applications and by calling them you’ll be able to put your best foot forward. It’s one of the most important things you can do for your application.

Now then…

Canada Council runs the Flying Squad program – it’s for Organizational Assistance. Program objectives are to assist professional arts organizations in targeted organizational development; to assist groups and associations of professional organizations that propose innovative organizational development activities, and to assist individuals working in the management of organizations to develop skills, networks and support systems within their communities and the community at large. There have been changes in the past while – here’s an update as of August 2013. Contact the Program Officer.

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has the Compass program – it  is the only organizational capacity-building program at the OAC. Compass helps all kinds of arts organizations work with outside experts who have specialized knowledge and experience.  Funding falls under two categories: organizational development and professional development. There have been changes recently. Contact the Program Officer.
