Stealth Art + Logic +Emotion

1238839_196103447238148_715729402_nLast class last night for DTRC and AHA. It’s been a good three weeks, with many of the same people having taken all three classes and others popping in and out to add new flavour and insights to the evening. Thanks to Dancer Transition Resource Centre and Artists’ Health Alliance for having me. And thanks to the participants for making them good classes.

Last night was focused on what the participants were doing – we used a couple of them as real live case studies to build strategy and organize tactics into a social media plan for them. One my clients is a member of Stealth Arts Collective. Very cool little org focusing on part guerilla tactics, all art. You can find them on Facebook – go check them out, because I think more people should know about them.

After teaching at DTRC this month, and also at Ryerson I’ve been thinking a lot about social media, in terms of what comes next. We tend to focus on tools and tactics because that’s the thing in front of us that needs doing now. What’s next?

Sunday Roundup on a Monday – it’s hotting up around here

Missed yesterday’s round-up, so here you go.

Also realized that starting Monday, we have a show or event a week opening for the next month and Arts Day at the City and on the Hill coming up in November. Which is AWESOME on many levels, but consider this an apology for what might be less frequent blog postings. We’re halfway through our course at Ryerson on marketing for the arts and tomorrow is the last in a series of three workshops I’ve been doing with DTRC/AHA. It has been a great opportunity to work closely and consistently with some good artists doing good events. Thanks to DTRC and AHA for the opportunity.

I will write as often as I can. (that sounds very Civil War era, but you know what I mean)

why social media? and allow yourself some white space

Yesterday and today are my white space days. Some work and a lot of reading getting done, but also relaxing and catching up with friends and magazine time. Reminder to get yourself that white space.

Tuesday night is part two in a three part series of social media workshops I’m presenting with DTRC/AHA – this week we’ll get into the strategy.
How do we use social media? How can we best engage our followers?  Get answers to these questions in this seminar aimed at companies and individuals who already have some social media presence.
We’ll help you understand how you can connect and combine your online presence to make sure you’re reaching the right people with the right content for them. We’ll go beyond the basics and expand your social media toolkit with hands on tips and tricks such as cross-posting, Hootsuite, scheduling posts and tweets, and more!

Thrilled to announce the addition of two new clients to my life, I’ll be doing social media strategy and execution for Kids’ Entertainment  – delighted as I’ve known the owner since my touring conference days and it’s great to work together again. And I’m super pleased to be the marketing/PR  for the 2013 Siminovitch Prize.

Definitely a working week

I was teaching last night at DTRC/AHA – the basics of social media. A dozen great participants who weren’t afraid to ask questions and get answers. One told me that she had taken three other “intro to social media” workshops and gotten more out of this one than the other three. Which is a LOVELY thing to hear and confirms you might be doing something right.

I thought about it a bit more on my way home and came to a conclusion – I think it’s that even though we spend time on the nuts and bolts (this is a hashtag, this is how long a tweet can be, this is an event page) we spend an equal amount of time on the why. Why are we doing this? Why does it make sense to tweet closer to the show date and post on the website earlier? Why do we want to talk to certain people about our work, and how do we want to talk to them (and how do they want to be talked to?)

I’m a why person. I need to know why I’m doing something in order to wrap my head around doing it. And I apparently teach accordingly. At any rate, a great night, and there are two more classes coming up – you can take one or take both. Next week we’re moving into tools and strategy, and the following week we’re getting into your projects. That one’s a limited class size, and participants can bring in the social media/marketing plans for a project they’re working on and we’ll go through it, tweaking and tightening and “you know what you could do?”-ing.

Lisa is off shooting the start of promo videos for Theatre Rusticle, and yesterday was creating the new teaser image for The Game – the playwrights are being announced.  I’m working out the kinks in onetwothree press releases today and creating eblasts.  Summer is over and the  season is upon us!

Reminder I am giving a full day workshop September 21, in association with Humber College. Finding Your Audience: Social Media for Artists  Diving into social media can be intimidating. Expert Sue Edworthy will demystify the process and get you going on your own social media strategy in this one-day intensive workshop developed specifically for artists of all disciplines.   Both theoretical and practical, in this workshop you will learn about social media strategy and then get “hands-on” on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.  Case studies from Canada and around the world will be presented to illustrate some winning approaches. Details to come soon.

And Tell Me About It with DTRC/Artists’ Health went so well, we’re figuring out a three class intensive to follow up to that, broken into beginners, strategy, and a master class. Fall 2013, details to come soon.

And back at the Chang School at Ryerson this fall for another round of CDAM 101 Communication and Promotion for the Arts. Seven weeks on Monday evenings, details to follow.

Working with Wiggly Dolly Productions and a stellar cast and creative team:  Writer:Dan Redican, Music: Scott White, Director: Sandra Balcovske, Cast: Sheila McCarthy, Dan Redican, Shawn Thompson, Madeleine Redican. Great group of fun talented folks and I’m enjoying working with them.

3 people. Bill, Elaine and Ted. Elaine married Bill and they now have a grown child. Or not. Elaine married Ted and Ted lost his friendship to Bill. Or Bill and Ted stayed friends and both lost Elaine.  Surely there’s one reality where all three managed to live happily ever after?

Sunday Roundup – April 7

rc_fluteNo rest for the weary this week as I spent yesterday afternoon at the first of four public consultations for spending priorities for the new arts funding. Online surveys and other consult dates are here. It was an interesting afternoon, with a full house and a great deal of discussion on spending and where artists and arts workers envision this new money going. I hope the responses are taken seriously by those collecting them, and thoughtfully added into the grand scheme of things. And I hope the momentum of the past year is maintained. It needs to be.

Sometimes Hearing is Believing  The Whipping Man is running for another week and I urge you to go and see it. Some wonderful work there.

Arts Funding, Social Media Presence, and Where We Work

Brendan Healy wrote an extremely brave letter last week. From TorontoistIt’s no secret that many of Toronto’s theatre companies have seen the numbers of paying customers coming through their doors shrink over the last few years. Companies have had to adjust in response—a process known euphemistically as “right-sizing.” But when the artistic director of one of Toronto’s most iconic companies—which Buddies In Bad Times, “the largest facility-based queer theatre company in the world,” definitely is—has to write a letter to the citizens of Toronto (theatre-going or not) expressing his surprise at low attendance for a new play from one of Canada’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights (Daniel MacIvor’s Arigato, Tokyo, in this instance), there’s a problem. ADs are not usually ones to admit a show, especially one they’ve directed themselves, isn’t performing up to their expectations in the box office.

TAPA has been working for quite some time on documenting and understanding these numbers. Quick article in the Globe and Mail last week –
Healy’s actions come less than a month after he attended a meeting to which the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts invited the artistic directors of some 185 professional theatre, dance and opera companies “to discuss the current climate … the current challenges.”
Details of the March 11 meeting are confidential. Nevertheless, it’s likely attendance was discussed as TAPA, established in 1979, has been gathering statistics for almost 10 years with respect to Toronto performing arts. In a brief interview Thursday, TAPA executive director Jacoba Knaapen noted that between 2005-06 and 2009-10, ticket sales to professional theatre, dance and opera performances declined by eight per cent, going to 2.3-million tickets purchased from 2.5-million.

Giving a workshop in Social Media 101 for DTRC’s Living Creatively conference. I like the setup of this one – Tierney of Tech Soup is doing the tech part, I am doing the social part. I like new formats, and am looking forward to seeing who’s there.

Off into the day. Apparently it’s spring. I wish I could see more proof of that.

OH! Was at the opening of Opera Atelier’s the Magic Flute last night – so, so beautiful. Go and see if you can. It’s an easy intro opera – populist if you will, it’s  in English and it’s  a singspiel and it’s wonderful to see so many people under the age of twenty, heck, under the age of twelve at the opera and loving it.
