The only question is whether you\u2019re shaping it intentionally\u2014or letting it form by accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get clear before we get visual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Name the Work You\u2019re <em>Actually<\/em> Making<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Not what you used to make.<br>Not what you hope to make someday.<br>What\u2019s happening now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In plain language:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kind of work is it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s the experience of it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do people tend to feel afterward?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t explain the work clearly, branding becomes vague.<br>And vague branding disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Find the Through Line<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when the projects change, something keeps showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for patterns in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>themes you repeat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>questions you\u2019re obsessed with<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>materials or formats you return to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reactions you care about most<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brand is often the thing you think is \u201cjust obvious.\u201d<br>(It\u2019s not obvious to anyone else. That\u2019s the point.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Decide Who It\u2019s For<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, we have to talk about audience. Briefly. Calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u201d is not an audience \u2014 it\u2019s a hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who already responds strongly to this work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who do you want more of?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who gets it quickly without needing a TED Talk?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarity here doesn\u2019t make your work smaller.<br>It makes your branding stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Write the Human Explanation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You need one short, repeatable sentence you can use without spiraling every time someone asks, <em>\u201cSo what do you do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I make <strong>[type of work]<\/strong> that explores <strong>[themes\/ideas]<\/strong> so people <strong>[feel\/think\/experience]<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t your tagline.<br>It\u2019s your anchor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything else builds from here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thought (Part 1)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If branding feels slippery, it\u2019s usually because meaning hasn\u2019t been nailed down yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t skip this part.<br>Visuals come later \u2014 and they work <em>much better<\/em> when the thinking is done first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s start here, because this is where things usually go sideways.
